WHAT IS BLACK FRIDAY?
Black Friday is the largest sales day in the United States, held on the day after Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November). Since its inception in the mid-20th century, it has spread to many countries throughout the world, including the UK, Germany, Brazil, India, Norway and France. It is often regarded as the busiest shopping period of the year.
How long does Black Friday last?
Although Black Friday traditionally lasts for one day, many stores now extend their sales across the entire weekend, and some even throughout the whole of November. Cyber Monday, which is regarded as the online version of Black Friday, is a 24-hour online shopping event which started in 2005. It takes place on the Monday after Black Friday.
Where does the name Black Friday come from?
The term “Black Friday” was first used by police officers in the 1950s to refer to the day between Thanksgiving and the annual Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia. When large numbers of shoppers and tourists came to the city for the game, they created chaos and traffic jams, forcing the local police officers to work long shifts instead of taking the day off. This led the police officers to call the day “Black Friday”. There’s another reason why the name “Black Friday” is linked to the Thanksgiving period. In the US, shopkeepers used to jot down their account details in books, recording profits in black ink and losses in red. When shops were making losses, they were said to be “in the red”, and when they were making profits, they were “in the black”. Regardless of how they did for much of the year, many shops went “into the black” on the day after Thanksgiving, as shoppers took advantage of discounted goods and sales went up.
